Laser cataract surgery is here!

Most people believe that cataract surgery is performed with a laser.  That's simply not true, up until now that is.  Just about all cataract removal in the US is performed with the use of knives and ultrasound, not laser.  Within the past year, however, a laser (LenSx) has been developed which automates the important steps of cataract surgery and replaces the need for knives.  If you or a loved one has cataracts, come see us to find out more about this option.

Macular Degeneration Update

The AREDS 2 study is currently on underway to evaluate the effects of high supplemental doses of dietary xanthophylls (lutein and zeaxanthin) and omega-3 fatty acieds (DHA and EPA) on the development of advanced age-related macular degeneration. Click here for more information.

New treatment for Dry Eye Syndrome and Blepharitis

Dry eye syndrome and Blepharitis are common inflammatory conditions of the eye and eyelids.  I am very excited to share with you promising findings in the treatment of posterior blepharitis/Meibomian Gland Dysfunction. A recent pilot study provided the first evidence that the oral administration of omega-3 (specifically PRN Dry Eye Omega Benefits) could penetrate the Meibomian Glands and enhance the composition of the oil in the meibum, which contributes to the lipid layer of the tear film. In fact, the studied confirmed the presence of the anti-inflammatory omega-3 in the meibum after oral administration of PRN's Dry Eye formulation.

These findings are significant, not only in their potential to create a paradigm shift in the way we treat posterior blepharitis/Meibomian Gland Dysfunction, but also because it is consistent with the clinical observations noted for the past few years in using PRN's Dry Eye product in my practice. Having treated over many Dry Eye patients with PRN omega-3 fatty acids in the triglyceride form, I have noted a 70-80% long-term success rate. I attribute this success to the high concentration of EPA and DHA, the nearly 100% absorption of triglyceride-form omega-3s and the new validation that the omega-3s in this product can uniquely penetrate the meibum. I am pleased to share this new data with you at your next appointment.

New Perspectives on Asians and Glaucoma

East Asians experience the highest rate of blindness in the world from primary angle closure glaucoma, one of the two most common forms of the disease.  A more rare form of glaucoma known as "normal tension glaucoma" is most prevalent among Japanese, including Japanese Americans.  Glaucoma is usually caused by a painless buildup of pressure in the eye which leads to visual loss.  Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness in the world, and the leading cause of blindness among African-Americans.
